With so many hair consumers pinching pennies these days, hair salons all across the country are slashing prices, throwing in free bennies or building service bundles at deep discounts to encourage those in need of hair help walking through the doors.

It's not just corner salons and small barber shops feeling the economy pinch. Even super sleek and elegant salons offering the very latest in newfangled hair styles, treatments and processes are getting aggressively creative in their efforts to dial up their flagging businesses.

Not only is Oribe a hair guru and the go-to guy for celebrities, he is a fashion insider as well. Even though economic times are tough, Oribe still charges $400 to pick up a pair of scissors.

But some other hair stylists in the Oribe salon, whose haircuts normally start at $100, have dropped their prices by 20 percent. Some of the other stylists have special first Tuesday of the month sales (as much as 40%) off until August. Be sure to ask when you call if there are any specials or deals.

The Oribe salon is kicking off a number of unusual enticements and recessionista hair deals. Book an appointment for 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. Friday, and Oribe will throw in breakfast. New ''Girls Night Out'' packages start at $100 for a combination of services such as a blow dry, makeup application and highlights. The Oribe salon is also sending discount fliers to local corporations and hotel workers.

So $400 might sound like a high price to pay for Oribe but keep in mind that in cities like New York or Washington, D.C. haircuts can range in cost from $800 to $1,000 (depending on the type of cut and other considerations) from big name celebrity stylists like Sally Hershberger or Ted Gibson. Sounds like a deal.
