Hair barrettes really never go out of style.

Like every other type of hair accessory they just cycle back in and out of fashion on a regular basis.

On the recent Spring runways hair accessories were very visible and barrettes were spotted on the catwalks.

Marc Jacobs showcased hair accessories including beautiful hair flowers.

Designer Carolina Herrera showcased wooded hair clips and barrettes.

Showcasing the new popularity of hair accessories at the Royal Wedding, the wife of England's Prime Minister wore a barrette.

It was holding back all the hair over one ear instead of donning one of the popular hats.

Barrettes As A Hair Accessory

Barrettes are a great hair accessory because they be functional, decorative or a combination of both.

Hair barrettes have been around since the beginning of time although in the early days of civilization barrettes were made out of a range of natural materials.

In current times you can find barrettes ranging in price from a few dollars (Goody, Scrunchi, Karina, Smoothies, Camila of Paris, Bellisima) to couture barrettes (Linda Levinson, Cara, Renee Rivera, Balu, HnW).

The high end couture barrettes are crafted from a wide range of materials ranging from plastic to hand cut cellulose, brass and a range of metals.

When barrettes are utilized as a functional hair accessory they can be used in a wide range of hairstyles.

They can be used to hold hair back along the fringe, clasped over one ear, to secure a half up, half down hairstyle or anchor a hair pouf.

They can even be worn as a ponytail clasp or clip for a hair twist, bun or chignon.

Barrettes Which Break

While some worry that barrettes are only appropriate for younger girls, that is no longer the case.

Barrettes are sometimes referred to has hair clips or slides and they can be worn by any age or race and for any hair type, texture and length.

Even men in some parts of the world wear barrettes which tend to be more simple and functional.

I have to say I would not even be shocked to see Steven Tyler from Aerosmith wearing hair barrettes to co-ordinate with his multi-colored hair extensions.

Select the size of your hair clips according to the following rules:

Functional Only

If you want to combine the decorative benefits of a hair clip with functionality be sure to select a clip according to where you plan to position the barrette on your head and the thickness of tresses you plan to have the clip hold.

One of the biggest challenges barrette wearers experience is when they try to secure too much hair with a barrette.

If too much hair is stuffed into a barrette there is a danger of the clasp breaking.

Decorative Only

While decorative hair clips and barrettes can be functional at the same time if you want to utilize a barrette as a decorative hair accessory it's less important to consider how much hair you wish capture with the clip.

Barrette Clasps

Although the majority of barrettes are made with what is known as a pinch-clip clasp, smaller barrettes may use what is known as a Migali clip which has the center metal bulb that the clip snaps onto.
