Term: Astringent

Formulation designed to remove oil from the skin and may be used to promote healing of irritated and inflamed skin. Common astringent agents include alum, oatmeal, yarrow, witch hazel, bayberry, very cold water and rubbing alcohol. Some astringent preparations include silver nitrate, zinc oxide, zinc sulfate, tincture of benzoin and tannic and gallic acids. It may also be used to remove excessive oil from the scalp which prevents oil from migrating to the hair or the face. May be used after cleansing the face to remove cleanser. Dries and shrinks superficial tissues by reducing water content.
